photoblog image Japanese umbrella

Japanese umbrella

The underside of a traditional Japanese umbrella I chanced upon at the Japanese Association club in Singapore. We actually went to the Japanese Association for a tea ceremony, but the umbrella proved to be best shot I snagged that day. Just goes to show you never know when or where you'll find a "Shutterchance"!

This was taken with the trusty old Panasonic TZ3, which due to it's handy size is conveniently in my wife's handbag everywhere she goes. The TZ3 is far from being the latest technology, but still an excellent tool. I think the spokes and intricate weave do all the talking. It's almost a zen art in itself, there's really not much for me to say.

Gorgeous color, great composition. I live in Japan but haven't found one like this!
Nicely framed. Great colors. Awesome catch!
If this is a hand-made umbrella, I'd be surprised that the Japanese didn't lose the art of such strikingly beautiful craftsmanship. In our time everything seems made by the machines.

gorgeous image. i once had an old traditional japanese umbrella, it was given to me and was very precious (carried in wooden trunk with lots of other treasures). then some horrible men came and burgled my house one night whilst i was out...found the umbrella out in the bushes ripped to shreds, a paper trail of delicate colour heading off into the savannah. pieced it together but it was never really the same after that.

Oooh. Didn't notice that you updated your blog. A very striking image i must say. Good catch there. Excellent composition and exposure control too. Seems like you're liking the compact snapper these days huh? Ever though of changing to a micro 4/3s cam with a pancake lens or even a M9? :p

Btw, i also just updated my blog after many months of collecting dust. smile
I would never risk fumbling in my wife's hand bag- you're a brave man!!
Great shot.
Still great!
Amazing smile!
