photoblog image What The Funk

What The Funk

This week's theme: Live gigs!

Photo #3 of 6 - Since you guys responded so well to the colour shots from yesterday, I decided to post another one. It's Edward Dibble on the flute from What The Funk (WTF), playing in a bar in Shepards Bush. Funky is probably the best way to describe their music, most (all?) of which are their own compositions.

In fact, they just had a performance yesterday (though this shot was from last year). If you're in the London area and interested in jazz, their gigs are not to be missed. Check out their website for more details on their next performance.

What live performance have you watched recently?

Another nice one. Nothing I can see to pick on. I'll check back later. Might notice something later on. smile
The Maven: Thanks for the comments Otokpa! Fortunately this image is digital, so the colours aren't going to fade between now and later on wink
Funny I have the same exact shot with the same lens. Yours has come out a lot better than mine. Well done.
The Maven: Maybe I'm more practiced at getting the "standard" shots like this one. But I think you too got some shots that were better than mine at this gig... like the ones with the wide angle distortion effect. Hope to see those posted on your blog some time.
Well I do have some really good shots from that gig and they were from my wide lens. Not many from the 30mm came out well. Sigh!

Not feeling this shot. Too grainy. However, loved yesterdays shot.

Great series. Probably my favorite so far.
Nice DOF & nice capture of the "action". You captured his concentration very well. The light & colors are soft which suits the mood of your picture. Nice !

great shot Duane. I am loving ur theme this week. interesting lighting
Nice shot, Duane. You got the focus just right on him. It's really something how great the DOF is. The colors are vibrant (like your last photo). Good work.

Well composed Duane. Like the way you situated the mic over the light hot spot. It's created a subdued lighting effect and enhanced the face of the subject by creating a focal point. Just the song sheet I don't like, it looks out of place relative to his position, spoiling the image slightly.

There's a difficult instrument to play. Handsome gentleman, love the burst of light in the background. Awesome photo.

It must have been challenging to get this shot, but it does not show. I mean its only the photographer would might value this shot and not more by the viewer.
aah, memories of being 11 and playing the flute. beautiful instrument. and i like that his sleeves are rolled up. don't ask me why.
yes great capture of atmosphere (through your use of light) and i like his expression. it says, 'i play the flute. it is a masterful instrument, but i can make it have universal appeal and distinct savoir faire in a funk context. for what is funk without flute?'
am i right?
Nice impression of the moment.
Nice lighting and dof in this shot. Maybe in such a situation I would have tried also a backlight, moving to have the light just back the head of the guy. Of course I don't know if was possible...

Very well composed. The hot spot behind the mike draws my eye to the most important part of the image; his mouth blowing into the flute.

Very nice, love the lighting and his expression playing the flute, really devoted smile

hmmm it has been a while since I watched a live perfomance... Rolling Stones are coming to Athens but the ticket price is expensive for me... smile
I like the burst of light coming from behind him.
