photoblog image Domed roof

Domed roof

This is the domed roof of the Canary Wharf underground station. The relatively dim lighting of the interior strongly contrasts with the very bright sky. Such a wide dynamic range is is challenging even for a DSLR to capture in RAW - as such, it's no surprise that parts of this scene are blown out, especially coming from a camera phone like the K800i.

Nevertheless, it looked ok (to me) as a black and white scene. If anything, the strong contrasts have made it more dramatic. So the next time you've got a blown out sky, you might want to "save" it by going to black and white too.

hey duane,

really awesome shot. i love the composition of this shot. it has a very sterile, industrial, clean feel to it. i think that you did a terrific job in handling the varrying contrasts. i also think that the conversion really decreased the presence of blown out areas. the only thing that i am not overly fond of is the way that you cut out the bottom of the escalator on the left side.
The Maven: Thanks for the comments Nicole. There's a pillar on the left side, so I composed it this way to avoid capturing it in the shot. Perhaps if I used a wide angle lens, I would be able to frame more of the escalator and still avoid the pillar. Will give it a try one day when I get my 17-40L back from Jide.

Now here's a real peach of a shot. It's attractively composed and wonderfully exposed. I really like the transition of tones from top to bottom.

From where I sit, it's exemplary - out of my league.
The Maven: I appreciate your comments a lot Colin. You are far too kind - there's a lot of excellent shots on your blog that I'm unable to attain as well. We each have our own specialities.

I recognised this from the thumbnail. I've got a shot a bit like this, taken with a compact a couple of years ago. However, yours is *much* better than mine. Very nice.
The Maven: Cheers of the comments Steve. I pass this escalator on the way to work everyday, so I guess it helps to have more shots to pick and choose from.
